“Stories Seldom Told: Matters of the Mind” Exhibition Opening

“Stories Seldom Told: Matters of the Mind” is more than just an art exhibit about the brain. For this project, SAY Sí’s young artists critically examined the mind and mental health issues by rethinking cultural stereotypes, sharing personal experiences and creating work that embraces new perceptions.

The annual Stories Seldom Told exhibition series reflects issues that are rarely spoken about and gives voice to those subjects who are often silenced. According to SAY Sí Visual Arts Director, Tommy Hopkins, “Stories Seldom Told challenges students to investigate and research issues outside their comfort zones, to think critically and analytically about the world around them and share these new insights through their art work.”

Through various mediums, student work will provoke audiences to reevaluate their own views of mental health. High School Visual Arts pieces visually reflect the processes and functions of the mind and tackle negative and positive perceptions of mental illness. Media Arts students have created multimedia interpretations of living with to have a mental illness. Students also formed digital mind maps using photography and graphic design elements. In contrast, middle school Visual Arts students focused on mental wellness by embroidering textile mandalas, symbolic of balance and spiritual enlightenment.

Rounding out the night, the ALAS Youth Theatre Company will present original short performances that explore the many facets of our mind, how it is used and how it shapes us as a society. Through short plays and multimedia/experimental performance work, ALAS will tackle a diverse array of issues and phenomena inspired by the beautiful and often mysterious human mind. These performances will continue daily until Sunday, July 7, 2013.
